As a service to members and the wider sheep industry MerinoLink is participating in the AWI Funded "Merino Lifetime Productivity Project" (MLP Project).

The MLP program is structured like a sire evaluation. MLP is evaluating 13 sires - nine industry sires, two link sires and two research sire. Ewes were Artificially Inseminated in January 2016. Ewes lambed down in small mobs to accommodate the nutrition requirements of single and multiple births. All progeny have been DNA tested the the Allflex TSU sample kit and are currently being processed.  The DNA pedigree will provide full pedigree information.  Progeny have currently been tagged and visually assessed for the standard sire evaluation traits including breech wrinkle, breech cover, fibre pigment, non-fibre pigment, birth coat, skin score and recessive black.

Progeny will be assessed at 10 months of age and then again at 20 months of age (visual and objective assessments) in line with the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association (AMSEA) requirements. Following the conclusion of the sire evaluation section the female progeny continue to be evaluated over 6 joinings. They will continue to have objective and visual traits measured in addition to reproductive traits. The ewe progeny will remain on “The Vale” - Marty Moses, Moses & Son and Bluechip Livestock.

    ABOUT RPP
The AWI developed and funded RPP workshop is designed for apparel wool producers aimed at lifting lifetime performance from their Merino ewes. RPP identifies key practical actions for commercial enterprises to implement on farm to achieve this performance aim.

The RPP workshop was piloted extensively in 2016 and feedback obtained from wool producers during the pilot phase has helped fine tune the program for national roll out in 2017.

RPP assists the commercial self-replacing Merino production sector in recognising and placing appropriate importance on the total lifetime productivity potential and value of their Merino ewes (fleece, meat, surplus stock) and aims to achieve a minimum weaning rate of 95% from Merino joinings.

RPP is designed to complement the AWI-funded Lifetime Ewe Management (LTEM) Program and provide pathways into other AWI supported training opportunities.
THE 5 KEY THEMES OF RPP
    1. Understand Ewe Lifetime Performance – Passengers v Performers
    2. Lift Ewe Performance as a National Priority
    3. The 3 Key Performance Practices:
    – Scan
    – Condition Score
    – Wet/Dry at Marking
    4. Turning potential to profit – Lamb and Wean Well
    5. Strategies for Success – Management Calendar
