2026-S13
The AWEX EMI closed on 1845c, down 12c at auction sales in Australia this week. The 27,667-bale offering was 2.5% lower than last week's selection and produced a clearance rate of 91.7%. The EMI lost 2c on Tuesday and washed off another 10c on Wednesday. Considering the heavy falls in the broader Merino's and Crossbred categories the EMI probably not reflective of the northern offering of primarily sub 16-19 micron combing merino types which all landed in positive price territory as did the Merino Carding Indices. Whilst the subdued market signals from the Nanjing wool market conference did not live up to last year's conference hype, the new price levels of wool and the price increase of competing fibres needed to be factored into the equation. The Australian Wool theme of lower national volumes is still front of mind for most traders and processors and will endure as the season progresses.
Merino Fleece
Merino Fleece opened strongly on Tuesday in the northern region, with selected superfine and Fine FNF high yielding best specified lots attracting keen competition. The fleece buyers reported difficulty in selling the broader merino fleece. Reports are coming in of increased volumes of broader merino fleece from South Australia & Western Victoria at the moment which the market is having difficulty in digesting.
Merino Skirtings
Merino Skirtings opened the week in line with the fleece on Tuesday with good buyer support for most types. Best specified FNF skirtings attracted keen competition. Wednesday saw some market pull back with pockets of price retracement on some types whilst the trend was in buyer's favour.
Merino Cardings
Merino Cardings have found a solid trading level in the past few weeks, and the weekly price uplift experienced on Tuesday saw these levels consolidate through to Wednesday's closing. The three carding indicators rose by an average of 31c driven by sharp increases on merino locks and support for most Carbonizing types as well as the Open top selection.
Crossbred Fleece
Crossbred Oddments
Crossbreds
Crossbreds were generally cheaper on both days as the increase in weekly offering materializes.
Next Week
Next week's national offering here is currently expected to increase slightly to 31,886 bales. The early market intel is for a solid market for Merino Combing and carding sectors whilst Crossbreds may come under further price pressure. ~Marty Moses

Market Commentary
Market Commentary: The EMI can send confusing signals at times, demonstrated by wool producers expressing concern that the market had fallen and lamenting a reduction in their wool values. When I explained the EMI had been pulled down by Coarser merino's and Crossbreds whilst the 16-18.5 MPG's had slowly risen over this time, the conversation quickly turned to a more positive tone. Whilst the Chinese Topmakers await clearer signals from the end user the European and Indian processors are stepping up. On a really positive note, the growing demand from processors for AWSS certified wool has really started to become more apparent, with positive reports emerging from both Chinese and European processors.
